Vision Cones are the signature detection mechanic of the classic Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series (2002–2006). Rendered as a semi-transparent wedge of light projecting forward from each guard's position, the cone visualises the exact volume of space in which Sam Fisher will be spotted. Avoiding, threading through, or exploiting these cones is the core spatial puzzle of every level in the franchise's stealth-focused era.
The system turned the environment into a chessboard: corridors, pillars, and shadows became tools for breaking a guard's line of sight, while the cone's geometry dictated safe paths. It defined the 'classic' identity of Splinter Cell and became the benchmark against which later stealth titles measured their own detection design.

Within the narrative framework of the series, guards and security personnel are trained to patrol fixed sight-lines, their awareness bounded by the architecture of the facility. The vision cone is the player-facing representation of that bounded awareness: a guard does not scan 360 degrees, but instead maintains a forward-facing field of attention shaped by where they are standing and which direction they face.
Pandemic Studios designed the cone as both a gameplay tool and a diegetic one. In the fiction, a guard's peripheral awareness is limited; in practice, the cone gives the player a readable, geometric rule to exploit. A guard facing a corridor sees the wedge fill with light; a guard turned away presents a narrow sliver. The player's job is to read that geometry and move through the gaps.
The mechanic also underpinned the series' emphasis on environmental storytelling. Because detection was spatial rather than purely time-based, level designers could build rooms, stairwells, and catwalks that rewarded careful observation of where cones overlapped, where shadows fell, and how a guard's patrol path would sweep the cone across a critical chokepoint.

The corridor smelled of recycled air and antiseptic. Sam pressed his back against the cold concrete, counting the seconds between the guard's turns. The yellow wedge swung left, caught the edge of a filing cabinet, swept right—empty. He exhaled. One step. Two. His boot found the shadow line where the overhead fluorescent bled into darkness, and the cone's edge passed over his shoulder like a searchlight missing its mark. The guard muttered something, adjusted his earpiece, and the wedge settled back toward the door. Sam was already three paces deeper into the dark, the cone a pale smear behind him, and the server room's blue glow waited just past the next pillar.

In the classic Splinter Cell titles, every guard projects a visible cone of detection in the direction they face. If Sam enters that cone while the guard is looking, he is spotted and the stealth run is compromised. The cone is not a fixed laser; it sweeps as the guard turns, patrols, or investigates a noise. The player's primary task is to read the cone's geometry—its width, its sweep arc, and where it overlaps with other guards—and thread Sam through the gaps.
The system was introduced in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (2002) by Pandemic Studios and became the franchise's visual signature. In Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory, the cones were refined with more dynamic guard AI and added 'suspicion' states where a guard narrows or redirects the cone while investigating. Double Agent continued the same core loop with additional environmental variables.
Standing in shadow breaks line of sight: even if Sam is within the cone's general direction, a wall, pillar, or the edge of a darkened area will sever the guard's detection. This is the single most important player-facing rule—shadow is not just cover, it is a hard boundary the cone cannot cross.
The system was fundamentally overhauled in Conviction (2010), which shifted toward a more action-oriented detection meter, and reworked again in Blacklist (2013) with a dynamic, less geometrically explicit approach. The classic cone—readable, geometric, and forgiving of careful positioning—remains the design most associated with the series' stealth identity.
