Lore & Background
In September 2020, Ubisoft announced that Red Storm and Reflections would be working on Oculus VR games based on its Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell franchises. However, the Splinter Cell VR game was later cancelled in 2022. Assassin's Creed Nexus VR was released in November 2023. This collaboration marked Reflections' direct involvement with the Splinter Cell brand, though the project was ultimately shelved. The studio's work on VR titles represented a new direction before the downsizing in January 2025.
In Their Own Story
The announcement came in September 2020: Ubisoft Reflections, alongside Red Storm, would develop Oculus VR games for both Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell. For Reflections, a studio known for racing games and support work, this was a chance to bring Sam Fisher into virtual reality. The team began prototyping stealth mechanics in VR, exploring how shadows and sound could work in an immersive space. But by 2022, the Splinter Cell VR project was cancelled, leaving only Assassin's Creed Nexus VR to reach release in November 2023. The cancellation reflected shifting priorities at Ubisoft, and Reflections continued its support role until the studio was downsized in January 2025.
Reader's Guide
Ubisoft Reflections was founded in 1984 in Newcastle upon Tyne, not Liverpool. The studio's history with Splinter Cell is limited to a single project: a VR game announced in September 2020, which was cancelled in 2022. The studio did not develop any mainline Splinter Cell titles or provide lighting and rendering technology for the series. Instead, Reflections focused on racing games (Driver, The Crew), support work for Tom Clancy's The Division and Watch Dogs, and original titles like Grow Home and Grow Up. The studio was downsized in January 2025, with the Leamington office (which Reflections frequently collaborated with) closed at the same time, affecting 185 employees across multiple locations.
